#PutinKills Shaliza Zain Dewa, Johannes van den Hende and their kids
As part of the #PutinKills awareness campaign, we would like to tell you about ordinary people who became victims of Putin’s regime in Russia. Here’s a few words about Shaliza Zain Dewa, Johannes van den Hende and their kids.
Australian residents Shaliza Zain Dewa, her husband Johannes van den Hende and their three children Piers, 15, Marnix, 12 and Margaux, 8, were among the 298 people killed.
One of the children, Piers, played for Melton Phoenix Football Club where he has been remembered as a “great kid” from a “great family”.
“He would play and he was refereeing the smaller side games and he was an up-and-coming, really good goal keeper. Really passionate soccer player,” club secretary Michelle Williamson said.
Family friend Neville de Morton said the loss of an entire family from the community would hit hard.
“I’m very sad, we’re a pretty tight-knit community. To lose a whole family in one episode is almost unbearable,” he said.
Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was shot down on July 17, 2014, killing all 283 passengers and 15 crew on board. The incident is the deadliest airliner shootdown incident to date. The crew was all Malaysian and about two-thirds of the passengers were Dutch while many of the other passengers were Australians and Malaysians. Germany, Canada, Belgium, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippines and the UK lost their citizens as well. Eighty of the passengers were under the age of 18.
It was a scheduled international passenger flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. It crashed near Torez in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, 40 km (25 mi) from the border.
The crash occurred during the ongoing war in Eastern Ukraine, in an area controlled by the Donbass People’s Militia. The plane was shot down by pro-Russian insurgents using a Buk surface-to-air missile fired from the territory, which they controlled.
An independent analysis by Bellingcat of open-source evidence indicated that Russian-backed separatists were in control of a Buk missile launcher on 17 July and transported it from Donetsk to Snizhne. Two parallel investigations are led by the Dutch. One is into the cause of the crash, and a second investigation is a criminal inquiry. The technical report will be released on October 13, 2015 while the criminal investigation could extend into 2016.
Chapter 8 of the report “Putin. War” based on the materials from Boris Nemtsov is devoted to the shootdown of MH17.
In July 2015, Malaysia proposed a UN resolution to set up an international tribunal to prosecute those suspected of being behind the downing of the plane. While the proposal gained a majority on the UN Security Council (11 countries voting for it, 3 abstaining), it was vetoed by Russia.
#PutinKills – because Putin started the war against Ukraine, denies Russia’s direct involvement into military operations in Eastern Ukraine, illegally annexed Crimea. He is guilty in thousands of deaths of this conflict, and displacement of millions of people, in equipping separatists with weapons including the BUK that shot down MH17 flight, in lies about this tragedy in particular and in launching a global propaganda war.
