Russian authorities are denying lawyers access to the imprisoned opposition politician Vladimir Kara-Murza, intensifying fears for his safety and well-being.

Urgent Action Required: Russian Authorities Transfer Kara-Murza to Prison Hospital, Deny Access to Lawyers

On July 4, 2024, Russian authorities abruptly transferred Vladimir Kara-Murza from a penal colony to the Regional Hospital No. 11 of the Federal Penitentiary Service (FSIN) in the Omsk Region. The Russian opposition politician is serving a 25-year prison sentence for criticizing Putin’s war in Ukraine.

A Historic Convention of Russian Civil Society Held in Washington

On June 3-4, 2024, the United States Institute of Peace (USIP), in collaboration with the National Endowment for Democracy, the U.S. Russia Foundation, and Free Russia Foundation, hosted the Washington Dialogue. The event convened over 100 exiled leaders of Russian civil society, united in their opposition to Putin’s war in Ukraine and pro-democracy work, to assess their cumulative capabilities and develop a joint path forward.
